From Inspiration to Exploration : time to dive a little deeper… by C Felgate

How do you turn 17,000 ideas into 4 exploration clusters (and what are ‘clusters’ anyway)? That’s the task that has been keeping our Vision Team busy since the beginning of the year. And I’m happy to present where we are with all that today. Goodbye Co-Inspiration phase, hello Co-Exploration!

On January 21st, we launched the Co-Exploration phase of our Vision 2030 project. To get to this point, we had to analyse all the ideas and dreams that have been submitted to our platform of collective intelligence since October. In total, over 5,000 people have contributed a total of 17,185 inputs, most of which were made following the workshops that our Vision Relays have deployed all over the world.

At 7pm sharp on January 14th we closed the digital platform for analysis. In other words, what exactly have people been talking about, what is important for them, what world do they want to live in?

You may recall from my previous articles that during the Co-Inspiration phase we were focusing on our three chosen themes: the Future of People, the Future of Sportspeople and the Future of Living. These themes have now mutated into 4 territories for further exploration. For each Co-Exploration territory, we propose 3 questions, enabling us to dive deeper into what could be our possible futures, and what could that mean for Decathlon? So, here they are:-

1. In 2030 and beyond, how will we have built a better, fairer and more conscious world?

  • In 2030 and beyond, how will we have solved humanity’s great challenges, how will we have made it better?
  • What will be the links between the preservation of humanity and profit, between meaning and growth?
  • Tomorrow, how will we measure the impact or growth of nations, regions, organisations, people?

2. In 2030 and beyond, what incredible experiences will be made possible by technology and our relationship with nature?

  • In the distant future, our lives became easy and harmonious… describe what you imagine!
  • Technology versus ecology? or how can they work together?
  • How will physical activity be enhanced by technology and ecology in 2030 and beyond?

3. In 2030 and beyond, what will have changed the most in your life?

  • In 2030 and beyond, what will be the new fundamentals and essential needs?
  • Which basic needs will be maintained?
  • What will have changed the most in our lives?

4. In 2030 and beyond, how will self-care serve the community?

  • What does SHARING mean in 2030 and beyond?
  • How can I live in harmony with myself and with others for a better world?
  • In 2030 and beyond, how will physical activity contribute to your life balance and the one of your community?

If these questions mean something to you, if you’d like to voice your opinion about them, please do so here! Participation to the Vision continues in the same vein as before. It’s open to all, there will be physical workshops and we will collect the inputs on our platform of collective intelligence. For those pressed for time we have a ‘I take part in 5 minutes’ option.

When we say open to all we really mean it! Following the 15 Vision Relay trainings that were deployed all over the world from October to January, and we currently have 243 Vision Relays trained and active. Workshops have been taking place not only in our stores, but outside them too. Wiola from Gliwice (Poland), not only thought it was interesting to ask ideas from children from a local school, but also a group or Visionaries from a retirement home about their thoughts for 2030. Then there’s Joanne from Taichung who took the Vision Process to her supplier, Tektro, to get them on board too. The ‘external’ participation rate is currently at 7%.

What if, in 2030… ?

So, how do we Co-Explore? The process for Co-Exploration invites people to share their ‘what if’ scenarios and imagining a story about the future they want to live in.

For example, here are a few ‘what if scenarios’ that we heard during the past week :

  • What if, in 2030, there won’t be any computers anymore…
  • What if, in 2030, no one goes hungry anymore…
  • What if, in 2030, every action has a positive reaction…
  • What if, in 2030, real growth is only measured by CO2 emissions and social impact…
  • What if, from 2030, everyone has to go to school, for life…

Once people share their ‘what if’ scenarios on the platform, they are invited to work with others to elaborate them and eventually come up with a story, like this one here by Pranshu, who lives in Kolkata, India :

« It is 5th March 2030, my 35th birthday. I see gradual progress around my ecosystem but want to see more efficient progress in the country and the world in general (healthy habits).

People can take decisions to improve the environment, habits and laws in order to see the progress.

Let’s have a progressive, positive and winning mindset.

Let’s take a call to improve ourselves and our ecosystem because we have to take care of our FUTURE PEOPLE.

Involve ourselves in sports, yoga, meditation and healthy habits. The consequence is the right decisions and a progressive world ».

So, what about Decathlon in all that?

Well, that will become much more clear in my article of next month. Tune in to find out what’s next!

If you’re from the press and would like to know more, or even interview us, you can check out the Press release on our One Blue Team press space.

A huge thanks to everyone from all over the world who has participated.

And a special, big shout-out to the crazy Vision Core Team with whom I am very happy to be on this journey #dontbealone, and also to my Vision guru, @Jiao Li
